I am trying to learn latin dances. When I watch people dancing, it looks so simple. When I tried , I can never catch the beat and right foot steps.
also is there any method to learn salsa on my own at home ?
Hi, it is not difficult to learn. You may want to start out at one of your local school that offers adult/ evening classes. Usually very affordable versus these private outfits that want $10.00 an hour. Anyway, some
places teach On 1 while others teach On 2. On 1 is easy to master.
3 steps as a leader. Start with both feet side by side. Left foot step forward on 1, Right foot step in place on 2, and left foot return to starting position on 3. (Count 4 is silent (not counted at all). Then count 5 is the right foot stepping back a little, count 6 is the left foot in place, count 7 is the right foot back to starting position. (Count 8 is silent.) Adding a little hip motion with your hands positioned above your waist area , you are now doing the basic steps to Salsa. Your partner (follower) will be moving opposite to your steps as a leader.
You should go to Youtube and look up basic Salsa and watch the videos. Or to really get started and learn the proper basics, get salsacrazy.com dvds on Ebay. Beginner 3 pack DVD is anywhere from $45.00 & up depending on which seller is trying to make a little more profit. Salsacrazy.com breaks down the steps with a lot of repetition and counting. 1,2,3, 5,6,7. After 3 or 4 sessions, you won't have to count out loud anymore. Eventually, you will be able to do outside & inside turns on the same basic counts, 1,2,3, 5,6,7 Then
you will be able to do open breaks, cross body leads. Which will open up your footwork for various new patterns. One other thing, you will learn to feel the beat of the music and stay on track. It will be ok to mess up, that is how you learn to correct your errors. You will be able to make up your own moves on the fly while keeping to the beat.
take it slow, and try your best… it takes time to learn any dance…
i looked like an idiot the first time i danced…
break it slowly down

i feel u on that feeling where u feel that u never catch the beat…it happened for me initially too…i used slower salsa songs to learn and worked my way faster…i also asked one of my female friends to learn with me so i could get used to the partnering (i'm a guy)…but it's jus about breaking down the steps and repetition to get used to it…remember to feel the music and most importantly have fun with it

Listen to the music, and clap to it. Don't think about your feet, just soft claps.
Then when you are feeling the beat, try it with your feet.
Your hands are much more clever than your feet, so get them trained first.
