I am just starting to get involved in musical theatre and I dont know what kind of dance lessons to take. is there a specific dance class that is meant for musical theatre? everyone is telling me that i need to take dance if im gonna do musical theatre. So what should i take?
musical theatre requires dancers with experience in certain kinds of dance depending on the play. lion king would require dancers to have modern and ballet technique, hairspray might need swing dancers, chicago might need jazz dancers… so its best for you to try to learn as much as possible. if i were you, i would try going to a dance studio that offers a variety of dance classes so you can be prepared for any type of role thrown your way.
I believe there are musical theatre specific classes. But if you cant find any in your area I would suggest jazz.

Ballet is a good place to start if you want to learn dance fundamentals. In my experience with musical theatre, choreographers will use ballet terms when giving choreography, so you should be familiar with what they mean. However, depending on the show you're doing, the choreography could be comprised of jazz, ballet, tap, modern, or a combination of all.
I would say that tap is helpful, but not essential. Jazz or ballet, and perhaps some modern would be a good choice.
Take a look for dance schools in your area–many schools now offer combined classes, or classes *in* musical theatre. At the very least, they should be able to suggest something for you. Also try contacting the theatre & dance department at area colleges; they should be able to tell you what they recommend for prospective theatre majors.

There is a specific class for musical theater, but some dance studios don't offer it so you may have to do some searching. If you can't find it you could always take jazz. It is very similar, but there is a little "dancing" rather than "acting". Good luck.

Take a few ballet classes, because ballet is pretty much the base for all dance. I would also suggest jazz and possibly lyrical.
