I have many a crazy friend. Some would say that I was the craziest of them all. It does not matter. Some of them I know through dancing, some of them I don’t. You want to know something crazy? Whether they’re my friends that dance for a living or my friends who can’t dance at all, they both have a fear of dancing. It seems that this crazy fear is something a lot of people have in common.

They even have a name for it now. Yes there’s a name for practically every condition out there, even people who need to switch the lights on and off seventy times while humming every note of ‘We Will Rock You’ on every off switch before they leave a room! If every one of these conditions is accurate, every single one of us on this planet is crazy and has at least a hundred different conditions. And you guessed it, there’s a frightening name for the fear of dancing, it’s called…chorophobia.

Now I don’t know about you and your friends, but I’m in no rush to send mine to the doctor’s yet…at least not for this reason! I typed in ‘fear of dancing’ into Google the other day and lo and behold, there were 2, 240, 000 websites that mention this. That’s a lot of chorophobiacs! There are hypnotherapists offering services to cure this, it is actually something that affects people’s lives.

Well let me tell you, I’ve been through this journey from start to finish. From sitting in the most comfortable chair in the world in every single room I graced where people were dancing…to being totally comfortable just dancing out of the blue on any London street. I have a dancer friend who also does gymnastics, who has no problem doing a back flip in the middle of his walking and then start dancing as if it’s as easy as 1-2-3, all while people are walking towards him from the opposite direction (credit to Scotty P Maurice).

So what’s the story? How do you get rid of the fear? Well there are basically two ways:

1. Just dance as best as you can and have fun, irrespective of what other people think and whether you look good or not.

2. Learn to dance well, and then as you build competence, your confidence will grow.

Two paths to the same destination. Of course if you choose number 2, number 1 will start to follow and you won’t care what other people think if you know you’re good!

You’ve all seen the first type, they’re dancing, you’re wondering what the hell they’re doing but they seem to be having fun and that’s all that matters. I’m sure you’ve also seen the second type, those really good dancers and thought to yourself, “Well duh, if I could dance like that, I wouldn’t be scared at all.”

Well you want to know something? A lot of those really good dancers are actually deep down scared as well. Time and time again I have seen extremely talented dancers, get ultra nervous and worried right before an audition or performance. They start doubting themselves and become blind to their own capabilities, convincing themselves they can’t remember dance choreographies and routines. And I’m talking about dancers most people would die to be as good as!

When I saw this happening, that’s when it struck me – it’s just a biology thing. It’s your body’s fight or flight response where you suddenly get that rush of adrenaline shoot up your body, jolting into every one of your nerves and making your knees become weak at the prospect of what’s to come. It could be damn good…or it could be damn nothing. And at those last moments what’s more real to you is how you could turn into nothing, the lowest of the low, the bottom of the pit and everything that could go wrong.

It could take a huge paradigm shift, a whole new shift in the way you look at life in general to erase your fear by the first method I mentioned above. In fact for some people they never achieve this shift. Carly Simon is an extremely talented musician who is known to suffer from stage fright (she used to have her bottom spanked because the physical pain helped rid her of the stage fright). If she did not have the competence or desire, she would probably have never got on stage.

But if you choose the second route (i.e. to build competence instead) it is a much more gradual experience where you desensitize yourself to the whole notion of dancing. When you have a problem, it’s usually a good idea to actually put yourself in a situation where you’ll be forced to deal with that situation and become used to it (rather than becoming used to thinking about it and talking yourself out of it).

Once you actually go to a couple of dance classes, it won’t be a big deal any more. Sure, you might still get a little nervous if you are a beginner or not familiar with the style, but you’ll put yourself in there, the fear won’t do nothing to stop you. So go ahead and dance, because there’s always a new chorophobiac just waiting to take your place around the corner (probably sitting in a chair).

I wanted to buy a how-to video for a partner-dance called the West Coast Swing, so I went to Google and did a search. As you’d expect, I instantly found 2,480,000 results, including quite a few sites that looked like they might have the professional-level show dancing that I was looking for.

What you wouldn’t expect was that a number of those websites were actually extension pages for YouTube.com.

Unless you’ve had your head buried in the sand for the past few years, you’ve probably heard of YouTube. It’s a website where anyone can post a video on almost any subject and make it available for the world to view.

At one end of the YouTube spectrum, you’ll find videos posted by silly teenagers to show off their pranks and shenanigans. At the other end, you’ll find serious “audition” videos posted by folks who are hoping to break into the entertainment industry. I know of many struggling actors/dancers/singers/comics who posted a video that became wildly popular – and, as a result, wound up with a deal with a major network or studio.

Based on my own experience, I can tell you that YouTube also has the potential to turn producing instructional or specialty videos into a fun and very profitable business for you. In my first video venture (where I was a partner), we began with under $100. Now, 10 years later, that business still makes over $250,000 annually.

If you are an expert in almost any field, you can produce a video to teach others some of what you know. You can star in your own video – or, if you’re camera shy, hire someone else. One of my most profitable videos features a certified exercise trainer teaching back stretches.

Almost anything that people might be interested in – from cooking to fishing to chess – can be a possible subject for your video. All you’ve got to do is produce it, market it, and reap the profits.

That’s where YouTube comes in. This free Internet phenomenon is a perfect marketing tool for instructional videos.

When I was searching for that West Coast Swing video, I assumed I would find a site where I could buy one. But, on a lark, I decided to take a look at some of the YouTube postings.

To my surprise, I found some excellent footage of the kind of thing I was looking for. Several of the postings had links to websites where I could then buy the full-length video. And because I’d seen samples of the material, I was confident that those videos would have what I wanted, so I ordered one.

It didn’t take me more than another 10 minutes to realize that I could be using YouTube to promote some of my own videos. I have several – including a basic instructional ballroom dance video – that I market. I posted a clip from that video on YouTube and, to my pleasant surprise, it immediately started getting views… and a few sales.

I don’t expect to get an avalanche of sales from this marketing strategy, but I do believe it will continue to be a steady source of extra income for me. Sweetest of all, these sales cost me nothing. There are no pay-per-click fees or profit-sharing deals. All the profits from YouTube-driven sales are mine to keep.

If the idea of using YouTube to market instructional or specialty videos interests you, here’s how you do it:

1. Go to YouTube.com.

2. Register yourself, and create a user name and passcode.

3. Upload a clip of your video. (YouTube provides easy-to-follow instructions. I did it myself – and I’m not very Internet savvy.)

4. List some keywords or search terms that are applicable to your video.

5. On your profile, write a little something about your credentials and put in a live link to your website (so interested viewers can learn more or buy the video).

Using YouTube as a marketing tool is a fabulous way to earn some extra cash. Take a few minutes to try it out and see how it works for you.

There was a time when couples had ‘their song’ and the decision of which track to use for the first dance at a wedding was a simple one. However, in the new millennium, this choice is not as easy as you might think for some couples. Whether this is due to a glut in good quality modern love songs and ballads is debatable, but with the growing popularity of hip hop, dance and house music, the likelihood of the newly-weds favourite song being at the right tempo and having appropriate lyrics, becomes more remote.

A quick search of U-tube will show you that this doesn’t pose a problem for everybody, with plenty of comedy clips of elaborate ‘first dances’ to tracks like ‘I Like Big Butts and I Cannot Lie’. However, such a theatrical approach is not to everyone’s taste and a return to the more traditional ballads of the twentieth century is still very common. Indeed, out of the top ten songs rated by users of www.occasionsongs.com only one was written within the last ten years.

It may seem obvious, but having selected a track, a quick check of the lyrics and some research into the premiss of the song is well worth doing. For example, at first listen, Lou Reeds ‘Perfect Day’ might be regarded as particularly suitable, with a great tune, tempo and seemingly appropriate lyrics. However, if you dig a little deeper, you will find that many people suggest that this song was written about Lou Reeds heroine addiction. Even if it wasn’t, the final line “you’re going to reap just what you sow” isn’t exactly the most romantic line ever.

Another classic song to be regularly misinterpreted is ‘Every Breath You Take’ by the Police. A quick google search will show you that this song is widely regarded as being about Stings break-up with his first wife (hardly a fitting sentiment for the first dance of a newly wed couple).

So how do you navigate your way through the pitfalls of choosing a song for the ‘first dance’ at your wedding, if you don’t already have a suitable favourite? Well, if you can’t face reading through the sleeve notes of your record collection, you can try some of the many internet sites offering suitable suggestions, such as www.occasionsongs.com , which as well as providing popular lists and song lyrics, also gives useful additional information about each song, allowing you to assess how appropriate it really is. If all else fails, you could just play safe and plump for an instrumental track instead (occasionsongs.com recommend Santana’s Samba Pa Ti).
