Where to learn Old Time Sequence and New Vogue Dancing

The first time is always the hardest and even though private instruction is just that, private, group classes are not really that intimidating. Most people you’ll find in these sorts of groups are extremely encouraging and friendly. However if you’re really shy then private instruction is the way to go. With all the TV coverage it’s really got people saying I want to do that.

Sequence and New Vogue dancing is easy to learn. You start with easy ones and then progress to the more difficult amalgamations. Since the exposure of dance in the media dancing in all types and styles has really taken off. Classes have increased dramatically and people want more. There are over one hundred sequence dances and more are being created and published via the UK, finally reaching the Australian shores. Here in Australia we have tended to take on British dancing from our early origins and have taken their dance styles through to today. Sequence dancing has taken on the same rhythms from the ballroom such as Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Jive or Swing. Some of the sequences dances to name, just a few, Georgella Blues, Saunter Together, Glen Roy Foxtrot, Georgella Blues, Mayfair Quickstep, Melody Foxtrot, Ragtime Swing, Rumba One.

There are many places around Australia to learn all these dances, one particular non profit organization is the Ulladulla District Dance Group Inc. This organization has been going now for more than 30 years in the Ulladulla south coast NSW area. They have been successful in promoting the best and most attended sequence ball (held in last May) in NSW and on the south coast. Many couples drive long distances to enjoy this great night out and spend the weekend in this beautiful town and catch up with all their friends from Canberra, Sydney and even Bega. Ulladullla is a famous fishing town it’s beautiful harbour and friendly people make it a great get away for dancers to visit for the weekend after they dance their feet off at this fabulous dance ball.

Other activities include a Friday night class before the big event, this gives many people time to chat up on there busy lives before the big night. The attendance has been stronger than ever since it started more than 10 years ago, with great music from a great band and organised with the best leadup work, which is why so many people to repeatedly book every year.

You can scout around in all cities for dance studios that teach these styles, your local area may have a studio. They may also include other styles of dance and this is quite common because of the variety people demand. Every studio may offer different styles so it’s best to contact them before making any commitments, each business will have different priced dance programs. Enjoy!

So many dancers have views regarding on-line videos that are available on the internet. With so many discussing this new form of class, I feel it is essential to discuss this topic head on since my husband and I are pioneering video broadcast solutions.

For most dancers who are teachers there are two views that take precedent over this issue. One is excitement over the fact that there is another way to teach. The other is how abhorrent they are to the very idea. As a teacher myself I can understand both viewpoints but what I want to do with this article is to give those who don’t understand the benefits of on-line videos a different perspective.

First of all remember that with any new idea there will always be pro and con opinions. Knowing this the first thing that we did was to send out a survey that asked dancers a lot of questions regarding what they were getting out of class and what some of the problems were that they were experiencing in class. We than asked what they wanted more of in the classroom. Both of us were amazed at the information that came in from dancers here and abroad. The one thing that all the women who wrote in had in common was their passion about belly dance and how excited they were to voice their opinions in the survey.

We than sent out another survey asking what they would like to see in an on-line video. Because of the information that we received I was able to look at my curriculum and format it to fit the camera better.

Addressing a specific problem on video as we all know is different so you have to work out the solution to the problem in a way dancers and students can understand.

Information is a key element in creating any dance video for students/ dancers, so the idea that videos are created without knowledge is fiction.

I know what many of you are thinking, that nothing can beat a live class with a dance teacher there to help you. I totally agree with you but let’s focus on the emails I received from dancers who had no teacher in their area or lived too far away from anyone who taught or they worked late and were busy raising their families. It was so apparent in the emails I received that these women wanted to learn belly dance but because of the reasons I mentioned they found they couldn’t. The on-line classes than became the solution to their various problems with their schedules, locations and families.

I also received emails from dancers who wanted to learn from other teachers but they wanted to do it in the privacy of their own home.

Others wanted to have classes created for them outside of their studios adding to what they were already learning. This all brings to mind the conversations regarding a very specific question, “How do you know the student is dancing correctly and how can you teach them without seeing their posture?” It is called feedback and it is the one thing that keeps the communication going between student and teacher. They get phone calls from me and emails. Any problem the student may have is addressed in the beginning and I have questions that I ask so that I can get a better idea of what they want. The video I make for them is created in my mind as if they were right there in the same room with me.

The idea that there is no feedback between the student and teacher is fiction.

Many people have commented that the economy is in such a state that maybe on-line classes are more in the range of dancers pocket books.

This is definitely one reason why on-line videos may be the new way to teach but there is also many other reasons. First of all dancers can get their curriculum out to the masses before they travel and teach their workshops. If people don’t know you, how will they find you? There are so many good teachers in our community and abroad who are not as well known as they should be. This is also a good way for dancers to see teachers they might have never known about otherwise.

Another advantage to on-line videos is that they are a less expensive way to get your curriculum, choreography out to dancers without having to fork out a lot of money to produce a dance video. Marketing your videos after you have spent a small fortune can hike up your investment to the point you may not make back your money. Believe me, I learned this the hard way myself. Once I put up my instructional video on-line I started to see a return on my money…..thank God!

The idea that on-line videos save money and are economical for the viewer/student is fact.

The format is very important in presenting your product so that the viewer can see the class from every angle along with the lighting, sound and curriculum. Most people who think about putting classes up on the internet might think that all they have to do is get a video camera and shoot a class. It really does take a lot more thought than that and you have to understand your own ability to teach first before you can than go and resolve problems or teach a class requested by a student. Once you start teaching on-line, you than need to have a type of tech support that doesn’t get in the way of your teaching. There are problems that can come up with the videos and you have to act fast to take care of whatever comes up. You have to guarantee your product and back it up, period. Adding to this is learning how to market your on-line classes. This means getting your newsletter/ blog out to your students and keeping up a rapport with them. Before you decide to teach on-line classes I would suggest you figure out first what exactly it is you want to achieve than go in that direction.

The idea that you can get a video camera and start shooting and creating classes is fiction. If you want to help women dance you must first know how to dance.

The bottom line is that creating on-line classes isn’t always easy because you have to understand the technical side to what you are doing which includes editing your work and than making sure that you have a quality video all the way around. I work very hard at each class that I do for dancers and students. What I offer is what I wish I would have had in the early days when I was working cattle in old Mexico. I was in the middle of nowhere practicing in pastures, ranches or around my horses. If I would have had an on-line class believe me I would of went for it. With that being said I will say again that on-line classes do not take the place of a live teacher but when you have no other options, on-line classes can be a life saver. I had a dancer write me and tell me that she would get home from work, cook dinner and get the kids to bed. Than she would take time for herself at around 11:00pm at night and take my on-line classes.

She said it was her “alone” time and she couldn’t wait to start dancing. There are many ways for us to learn what ever it is we are passionate about and it is for women like this dancer that I do on- line classes.

The idea that on-line classes will never take the place of a live teacher in a studio is a fact.

For women like the one I mentioned the on-line classes helped her enjoy her solitude and for her and many other women on-line classes have their place adding to the widespread education of belly dance and its history.

On

–

line classes were never meant to take the place of live classes, they are a needed option in todays world and with emails like the one I mentioned it’s obvious to me women need this ancient art form now more than ever.

I wanted to buy a how-to video for a partner-dance called the West Coast Swing, so I went to Google and did a search. As you’d expect, I instantly found 2,480,000 results, including quite a few sites that looked like they might have the professional-level show dancing that I was looking for.

What you wouldn’t expect was that a number of those websites were actually extension pages for YouTube.com.

Unless you’ve had your head buried in the sand for the past few years, you’ve probably heard of YouTube. It’s a website where anyone can post a video on almost any subject and make it available for the world to view.

At one end of the YouTube spectrum, you’ll find videos posted by silly teenagers to show off their pranks and shenanigans. At the other end, you’ll find serious “audition” videos posted by folks who are hoping to break into the entertainment industry. I know of many struggling actors/dancers/singers/comics who posted a video that became wildly popular – and, as a result, wound up with a deal with a major network or studio.

Based on my own experience, I can tell you that YouTube also has the potential to turn producing instructional or specialty videos into a fun and very profitable business for you. In my first video venture (where I was a partner), we began with under $100. Now, 10 years later, that business still makes over $250,000 annually.

If you are an expert in almost any field, you can produce a video to teach others some of what you know. You can star in your own video – or, if you’re camera shy, hire someone else. One of my most profitable videos features a certified exercise trainer teaching back stretches.

Almost anything that people might be interested in – from cooking to fishing to chess – can be a possible subject for your video. All you’ve got to do is produce it, market it, and reap the profits.

That’s where YouTube comes in. This free Internet phenomenon is a perfect marketing tool for instructional videos.

When I was searching for that West Coast Swing video, I assumed I would find a site where I could buy one. But, on a lark, I decided to take a look at some of the YouTube postings.

To my surprise, I found some excellent footage of the kind of thing I was looking for. Several of the postings had links to websites where I could then buy the full-length video. And because I’d seen samples of the material, I was confident that those videos would have what I wanted, so I ordered one.

It didn’t take me more than another 10 minutes to realize that I could be using YouTube to promote some of my own videos. I have several – including a basic instructional ballroom dance video – that I market. I posted a clip from that video on YouTube and, to my pleasant surprise, it immediately started getting views… and a few sales.

I don’t expect to get an avalanche of sales from this marketing strategy, but I do believe it will continue to be a steady source of extra income for me. Sweetest of all, these sales cost me nothing. There are no pay-per-click fees or profit-sharing deals. All the profits from YouTube-driven sales are mine to keep.

If the idea of using YouTube to market instructional or specialty videos interests you, here’s how you do it:

1. Go to YouTube.com.

2. Register yourself, and create a user name and passcode.

3. Upload a clip of your video. (YouTube provides easy-to-follow instructions. I did it myself – and I’m not very Internet savvy.)

4. List some keywords or search terms that are applicable to your video.

5. On your profile, write a little something about your credentials and put in a live link to your website (so interested viewers can learn more or buy the video).

Using YouTube as a marketing tool is a fabulous way to earn some extra cash. Take a few minutes to try it out and see how it works for you.

I live in Tacoma, Washington and I want to start lyrical/ contemporary dancing but I want my lessons to be one on one so that I can learn more, do you guys know of any dance studios near me that offer one on one classes?

The best thing to do is look in the yellow pages and call around to different studios to see if anyone offers one on one classes. Also even though by taking a one on one class you get more attention and can possibly learn more faster, it’s still very good to take classes with a group of people. It’s much more fun and much more inspiring to learn and dance with other dancers. Which is one of the reasons it’s sometimes hard, depending on where you live, to find studios and teachers who offer one on one classes.

I’m in love with choreography. When I was little I loved movie musicals. Now I want to learn dance.

Here are the problems with that:

I’m 41. For somebody just starting out dance, that’s pretty late in the game. I keep saying to myself, "Gwen Verdon" danced the lead in"Sweet Charity" at 41, but she danced all her life to get there!

I’m not as thin as I’d like to be. I can lose weight quickly, and my muscles spring out hard very easily when I exercise regularly, but right this second, I’m built "sturdy" – not slinky.

I have very heavy, sturdy, super strong bones – they don’t break, no matter what I do. That’s good for dance injuries, but that kind of bone density makes you physically heavy because these bones are heavier than more fragile ones. I’ll have to work so much harder to get lift when I do jumps. That’s intimidating.

Last, I have a damaged tendon in my left ankle and foot, and when I exert it, it becomes inflamed and hurts like the dickens. I can fight through the pain and I think dance is worth it. Besides, I’m sure dancers all face painful feet and ankles. That’s the biz I guess. So there are the obstacles.

The good points: I live in New York. Lots of dance schools here. But I don’t know where to start, there are so many! I could find and hang out with real dancers and dance students here. But I’m so lost, and I am also very scared. What should I do to start dance at 41? Am I a dreamer? Is there any hope for a 41 year old late bloomer?

Thanks for all answers, Yahoo dance community. Really. This is my dream.

Out of luck, absolutely not!

In terms of the body, don’t worry about getting thin. Body type has nothing to do with talent, it’s just a stereotype that gets you hired as a classical ballet dancer. I’ve seen 180 lb women with amazing talent, and I’ve seen 90 lb women that look like a grasshopper on stage. Also, that ‘slinky’ body is genetic, you can’t work out to get it. If you’re ‘sturdy boned’ then you always will be. At your age and at your ability you don’t want to have the bones of a little bird, nor do you want that facility. You want your body to be a sturdy and solid instrument on which you can rely. Overly flexible usually means weak, and weak means dangerous. You want a balance of strength and flexibility, as one is useless without the other.

To get in shape for dance I strongly recommend you sign up for yoga and pilates classes, especially in the ‘off season’. They’ll give you the long and lean muscles that dancers seek and use, and they’ll greatly improve your balance and flexibility (plus they’re nice and relaxing!). Running and lifting weights are useless for dancers. If you want good cardio, take up swimming. No impact on the joints and it burns huge calories. Skipping rope (professional boxer style, not double dutch) is a good way to get cardio, too, just make sure you’re in good shoes and using your knees properly.

The tendon may be fixable. If you haven’t been to physiotherapy then you need to go, even if it’s only for one or two sessions. They’ll teach you valuable at-home exercises. For the inflammation, remember RICE. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. Alternate between hot and cold compresses to reduce the swelling. Ibuprofen may help (Tylenol is NOT an anti-inflammatory). A proper support may be what you need. Get fit for a brace if your doctor deems it necessary. You’ll thank yourself when you’re 80. You may want to ask about special insoles for daily wear. It really depends on your injury.

Dance SHOULDN’T hurt if you’re doing it properly, so don’t convince yourself that beauty is pain and all that. If something hurts then that is your body’s way of saying SLOW DOWN, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG! Listen to your body talking. Some things will be uncomfortable, and you may be sore after classes, but you should never be in agony. If you take care of your body it will return the favor.

You’re certainly not too old to physically partake in dance. Some professionals dance until 40 (and are asked to retire for being ‘old’), and continue teaching well after that. My mother is far too old for the stage, but at 56 she still has the grace she had at 22 (and the skinny legs, which I envy). As long as you are physically in shape, age truly is ‘just a number’. Even my 80 year old grandmother still has that dancer poise (underneath the Parkinsons, mind you). You can spot dancers from a mile away, even when they’re ”old”.

I’ve had an 80 year old woman in one of my beginner classes, and she was awesome! I’ve also seen a man close to 90 move in ways I could only imagine (he’d studied yoga his entire life). Your mind creates these limitations, and with concentration you can free yourself from them. Set realistic goals, but don’t let the idea of ‘being over 40′ stop you from dancing to your very best potential. Baby steps, and stop when it hurts.

For now, sign up for yoga and pilates. Then, look for dance studios in your area (Mintchip had great suggestions). Sign up for beginner level adult classes once or twice a week. Go from there

Best of luck, I hope you discover a new passion.

(Also, you’ll probably learn basic technique for the first few years, don’t expect to see many jumps).

There are moments when I watch my student’s dance that I get goose bumps and chills up my spine. And I’m in amazement of their creative “natural state of being”.

As a teacher the ability to ‘teach’ another dancer is a position that I don’t take lightly. It is an honor.

In the beginning of my classes most of my students can’t wait to get started learning our ancient art form. And for those students who come to me with experience they can’t wait to learn something different. When class starts I am always in amazement at the array of talent and enthusiasm in each student.

This is the best time and it is a reminder as to why every year I teach and nurture the aspiring belly dancer to be.

The relationship that develops between a teacher and student in any form of learning is a crucial one. Unfortunately I can’t say that all my relationships with my students were the best. Why this happens has been perplexing to me for years. But after years of teaching I often think back remembering some of the interesting situations that have come up with some of my students. Some of these experiences I would like to share with you. Maybe in sharing I will be able to help other teachers out there to see what “not” to do with your students.

The studio that I had a few years ago was a sanctuary for dancers to come in and feel creative and dance freely. This I thought was what everybody wanted who walked through my front door…. well, not quite.

Teaching is one thing but counseling is another. Students would come in and bring in problems, issues, and occasionally bad habits. Now, as a teacher I would give them the best class that I could but eventually I wasn’t leaving the studio until late at night because of my “counseling sessions”. This was nobody’s fault but my own. Well what do you suppose happened? I became involved advising some of my students on issues outside of dance. And eventually these late night talks came back to bite me in my (you know where).

You must first and foremost be their dance teacher…period. As I learned the hard way that is all I was really required to do. But it is hard when a student confides in you to turn your back on her or him and insist that they keep their issues and problems outside the studio. I don’t know a dance teacher who is a friend of mine who can do that. We all want our students to be happy because they in a way become an extension of us. But this is unrealistic because our students are individuals when they walk in the front door and they will continue on in life whether they stay with us or not. I found I did not live in a glass house so I needed to stop being “Leyla the advisor”.

At one point I have to tell you I really thought I had an invisible sign that read:

“If you are a little odd come to my studio”
One couple came into my studio and brought their marital problems with them every time they had class with me.

You can imagine the sarcastic remarks, snide grimaces, and shocking language that was tossed back and forth across the dance floor.

Another student decided she wanted to become a vampire. (That’s a whole other story)
Than there was the student that had two nervous break downs in class to the point I literally had to hold her up and get her to breathing normally as she was crying uncontrollably. She would hold up class for up to 20 minutes.

There was a student who was the tantrum queen if she didn’t understand a combination or if she didn’t get that “personal” attention. She would go and sulk in the corner until

I told her to get back into class. That was her queue to tell me “no”. And she would sit and glare at me throughout the rest of class eventually leaving with a major chip on her shoulder.

Last but not least was the alcoholic dancer who was so “bubbly” in class that she was continually coming on to some of the other students and their spouses. Though, she could never remember any of her inappropriate conduct and was in disbelief when confronted with her actions.

Now, I can’t say everybody has had these kinds of situations but what I realized is that people can’t help but bring their emotional baggage that they are experiencing in life into class. But there are certain lines that cannot be crossed within a studio. So what did I do with students like the ones I mentioned? It was simple; I asked them to leave the studio. The studio was no longer respected by these students. Mutual respect between teachers and students is a must.

I have had a few students who were disappointed in me because they felt I didn’t know as much as they thought I should. This is what I call the “pedestal syndrome”. They quickly put me up on a pedestal only to knock me off at the first hint of disappointment. My first experience with the “pedestal syndrome” was when I had an audition at my studio for my students to have a chance to perform with a local band at one of the casinos here in our area. I had informed the girls ahead of time that I would have snacks and drinks including some alcohol so those dancers apprehensive could have a little something to calm their nerves. The head musician came and all went well I thought. He made his choice and thanked me profusely for having the audition and he thanked the girls for dancing for him. But it all landed on deaf ears. The girls who were not picked got very upset and blamed me. They said he was insulting and that they felt like pieces of meat. The two girls that he picked were my newest students and of course they got picked because they flirted with him according to “these” dancers. All in all I was cornered in my own studio and berated because I should have known better and how could I let any of that happen. I was told that I was not the teacher they thought I was. Students took sides and I lost 4 because of the audition.

My first mistake was thinking that these students could handle the disappointment of not being picked. So they were right, I should have known that. The ego is a very fragile and shallow part of the human emotions. It doesn’t take much for it to break and for any us to fall apart. I realized at that moment that the dancers who were so quick to put me up on a pedestal were the ones with the most fragile egos. A fragile ego always needs a scapegoat because nobody wants to admit that they weren’t good enough. And if they weren’t good enough to be picked than it had to be my fault. I was their teacher and I should have done better. This was a great lesson for me because I realized that what I had given my students couldn’t be appreciated. They had no guidelines or experience to know that what I did was in the safety of the studio. I knew this because of my auditions I went through over the years. I experienced some really horrible auditions. You can’t give to your students what they can’t appreciate. They won’t respect you for it and you will end up losing them as students.

It’s also important to know when to let your students go. There were a few times that my students didn’t want to go to other teachers. I insist that my students take from as many teachers as possible because I feel they will progress faster. But there are those students that come to us who complain about other studios and teachers. So as a teacher what do we do? If someone says that you are so nice and so and so is so mean and she would much rather take from you, how do you handle it? It’s quite the question because what we say in our dance community will usually get back to the person we talked about. I had a student that came in and told me she had been to many studios and was treated terribly. So I told her stay with me and we’ll see how things go. Well low and behold she was telling the other studios how mean I was during the time she was taking classes from me. So she was taking from all of us and telling each teacher how mean the other teachers were. Eventually a student like this leaves because she can’t ever be satisfied. She creates chaos because if she fails she can blame all her teachers. You can’t take it personal when a student leaves you either in good conditions or bad. Either way we must wish them off on their journey with light and love. This is what our dance is all about.

So what does any of this mean? It means that as long as any of us are willing to teach others this amazing dance form, we will be in the forefront of aspiring belly dancers hopes, dreams,
disappointments and disillusionments. And as long as we continue to learn and grow ourselves we can than become the teachers our students will hold in their hearts as they become the next generation of teachers. And as teachers, what better success can we have than to know that this dance will thrive and grow long after we are gone.

There are many dance studios that you can go to learn dance. Every one’s heard of the best and mainstream ones where all the top dancers, choreographers and pop superstars go. But in many large cities there are a number of underground dance studios quietly doing their business with very high standards of dancers.

So how can you find out about these dance studios that not many people have heard about? Well for the most part you find out about them by getting involved in the dance industry and making friends with other dancers. Many times you’ll find out about them by going to the popular dance studios and meeting other dancers there who also go to these underground dance studios.

A lot of these underground dance studios will specialise in only a handful of dance studios which is not surprising since they are not mainstream. Since forever bboys and bgirls have had meetups where they just find an area where they can practise.

There are lots of these underground dance studios that specialise in hip hop or locking and popping. Especially in the inner cities, where people are just doing their own thing.

Usually the more you get involved in a particular community the more you’ll find about these places that dancers go to practise. Many times they’ll have teachers there who are teaching dance classes. Sometimes you can find out about them just by participating in online forums or hanging out with people who are heavily involved in the scene.

A lot of the time these underground places will be cheaper than the mainstream studios and you can get into some good dance classes for a lot cheaper.

You’ll frequently find that these underground dance studios are the places that many dance companies or dance troupes might go for their dance rehearsals and the studios are not as expensive to hire. If you know anyone in a dance crew it’s also worth asking where they practise as it may an underground place that a lot of people go to.

Also don’t feel that it’s the end of the world if you can’t find an underground dance studio. There are plenty of dance studios and opportunities where you can learn many dance styles.

Underground dance studios are not necessarily any better, sometimes they are better, sometimes their standard is worse or just less polished. It’s usually a different crowd and different scene from the other dance studios, if it’s your scene most likely you will find out about it in time.
