Here are the problems with that:

I’m 41. For somebody just starting out dance, that’s pretty late in the game. I keep saying to myself, "Gwen Verdon" danced the lead in"Sweet Charity" at 41, but she danced all her life to get there!

I’m not as thin as I’d like to be. I can lose weight quickly, and my muscles spring out hard very easily when I exercise regularly, but right this second, I’m built "sturdy" – not slinky.

I have very heavy, sturdy, super strong bones – they don’t break, no matter what I do. That’s good for dance injuries, but that kind of bone density makes you physically heavy because these bones are heavier than more fragile ones. I’ll have to work so much harder to get lift when I do jumps. That’s intimidating.

Last, I have a damaged tendon in my left ankle and foot, and when I exert it, it becomes inflamed and hurts like the dickens. I can fight through the pain and I think dance is worth it. Besides, I’m sure dancers all face painful feet and ankles. That’s the biz I guess. So there are the obstacles.

The good points: I live in New York. Lots of dance schools here. But I don’t know where to start, there are so many! I could find and hang out with real dancers and dance students here. But I’m so lost, and I am also very scared. What should I do to start dance at 41? Am I a dreamer? Is there any hope for a 41 year old late bloomer?

Thanks for all answers, Yahoo dance community. Really. This is my dream.

In terms of the body, don’t worry about getting thin. Body type has nothing to do with talent, it’s just a stereotype that gets you hired as a classical ballet dancer. I’ve seen 180 lb women with amazing talent, and I’ve seen 90 lb women that look like a grasshopper on stage. Also, that ’slinky’ body is genetic, you can’t work out to get it. If you’re ’sturdy boned’ then you always will be. At your age and at your ability you don’t want to have the bones of a little bird, nor do you want that facility. You want your body to be a sturdy and solid instrument on which you can rely. Overly flexible usually means weak, and weak means dangerous. You want a balance of strength and flexibility, as one is useless without the other.

To get in shape for dance I strongly recommend you sign up for yoga and pilates classes, especially in the ‘off season’. They’ll give you the long and lean muscles that dancers seek and use, and they’ll greatly improve your balance and flexibility (plus they’re nice and relaxing!). Running and lifting weights are useless for dancers. If you want good cardio, take up swimming. No impact on the joints and it burns huge calories. Skipping rope (professional boxer style, not double dutch) is a good way to get cardio, too, just make sure you’re in good shoes and using your knees properly.

The tendon may be fixable. If you haven’t been to physiotherapy then you need to go, even if it’s only for one or two sessions. They’ll teach you valuable at-home exercises. For the inflammation, remember RICE. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. Alternate between hot and cold compresses to reduce the swelling. Ibuprofen may help (Tylenol is NOT an anti-inflammatory). A proper support may be what you need. Get fit for a brace if your doctor deems it necessary. You’ll thank yourself when you’re 80. You may want to ask about special insoles for daily wear. It really depends on your injury.

Dance SHOULDN’T hurt if you’re doing it properly, so don’t convince yourself that beauty is pain and all that. If something hurts then that is your body’s way of saying SLOW DOWN, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG! Listen to your body talking. Some things will be uncomfortable, and you may be sore after classes, but you should never be in agony. If you take care of your body it will return the favor.

You’re certainly not too old to physically partake in dance. Some professionals dance until 40 (and are asked to retire for being ‘old’), and continue teaching well after that. My mother is far too old for the stage, but at 56 she still has the grace she had at 22 (and the skinny legs, which I envy). As long as you are physically in shape, age truly is ‘just a number’. Even my 80 year old grandmother still has that dancer poise (underneath the Parkinsons, mind you). You can spot dancers from a mile away, even when they’re ”old”.

I’ve had an 80 year old woman in one of my beginner classes, and she was awesome! I’ve also seen a man close to 90 move in ways I could only imagine (he’d studied yoga his entire life). Your mind creates these limitations, and with concentration you can free yourself from them. Set realistic goals, but don’t let the idea of ‘being over 40′ stop you from dancing to your very best potential. Baby steps, and stop when it hurts.

For now, sign up for yoga and pilates. Then, look for dance studios in your area (Mintchip had great suggestions). Sign up for beginner level adult classes once or twice a week. Go from there

(Also, you’ll probably learn basic technique for the first few years, don’t expect to see many jumps).

Whatever this season is, I was tired of the dancing, judges, and contestants. I just couldn’t stand to watch Chloris Leachman. Melissa Rycroft, The Woz, Julianne’s boyfriend, Chuck Wicks, Denise Richards, Shawn Johnson, and a few others came along too that really didn’t interest me either.

Who did I find to be the most interesting? I could not wait to watch Gilles Marini expertly dance during each episode. I really got interested in him after I saw the Sex and the City movie we he portrayed the character Dante. Proving he’s no one-act wonder, Gilles shows his other talents on dancing with the stars. He turns the heat up in the ballroom when he dances. Carrie Ann Inaba even mentioned how lucky his wife was.

The big disappointment on the show was Denise Richards – she showed an almost total lack of both talent and personality. Unfortunately The Woz had a great personality but just couldn’t find his groove. While Chuck Wicks put in 110% and stayed on the show week after week. I have to admit I never would have dreamed Lil’ Kim, who I knew very little about before the show, would turn out to be an incredible dancer and one of my favorite celebs. Derek Huff showed what expert choreography and showmanship can bring to the dance floor with his amazing routines. They proved to be a powerful duo when they showed that they had chemistry along with their talent. That’s why I was very surprised when Lil’ Kim was knocked out of competition with four other couples still alive.

As it stands right now the last couples in competition are Melissa and Tony, Ty and Chelsie, Gilles and Cheryl, Shawn and Mark. When Jewel fractured the tibia in both her legs five days before the season premiere, that is when Melissa stepped up and took her place. She showed immediately that she had ballet training. Ballet really paid off for Melissa. Twice she scored thirty out of thirty from the three judges. Even if you get a perfect score from the judges, you still risk being voted off the show. Just like Sabrina Bryan. She received a perfect score in another season and was eliminated early. The celeb dancer who has shown real progress is World Champion rodeo cowboy Ty Murry. Ty’s experience riding bulls and guiding horses doesn’t translate directly to the dance floor and provided a big cache of voting fans who normally wouldn’t watch Dancing with the Stars. Shawn Johnson’s Olympic performance was so endearing, and her dancing is the same. And rounding this amazing cast of celebrities is Gilles Marini who didn’t make a move I didn’t absolutely love.

Who will win? Eliminations are continuing on this week’s episode. But afterwards, when only three celebrities and their partners are left, each dance team has a chance to prove to the judge’s they’re the ones who deserve to win. You know what I’ll be watching that evening. I hope it lives up to the best moments that have already happened this season and we get to see the best final yet!

Hopefully you can watch Dancing in HD like I can – it really does make a difference. Recently my son convinced me to ditch my regular TV and make the jump to an HDTV. Oh Man! Whatever this season promised to bring, I had become tired of all of the dancing, drama, judges, and contestants. I refused to watch the whole time Chloris Leachman was on. Melissa Rycroft, The Woz, Julianne’s boyfriend, Chuck Wicks, Denise Richards, Shawn Johnson, and a few others came along too that really didn’t interest me either.

Despite that dreadful lineup, there was an individual that did make it all worthwhile. It was french actor Gilles Marini who pulled it all together for the eighth season of Dancing with the Stars  After watching the Sex and the City movie, he really spiked my interest. Proving he’s no one-act wonder, Gilles shows his other talents on Dancing with the Stars. Gilles practically burned the finish off the the dance floor with his amazing moves. Carrie Ann Inaba explained that Gilles wife is a very lucky girl to have a husband with such great moves.

Denise Richards was a big disappointment, lacking talent as well as personality. The Woz may be a computer genius and he definitely seemed like a great guy, but he just didn’t have the moves on the dance floor. Chuck Wicks gave it his all, and lasted longer than most. I have to admit I never would have dreamed Lil’ Kim, who I knew very little about before the show, would turn out to be an incredible dancer and one of my favorite celebs. With his inspiration and choreography, Derek Huff brought dancing with the stars to a professional level little seen in past seasons. They proved to be a powerful duo when they showed that they had chemistry along with their talent. That’s why I was very surprised when Lil’ Kim was knocked out of competition with four other couples still alive.

You may recall the song-smith Jewel was originally slated for this seasons cast of celebs. However, Jewel fractured bones in her legs just a couple of days before the premiere and Melissa had to fill in. Melissa didn’t struggle too much for someone with such little prep time – she has training in ballet. Her dancing has been almost flawless, earning her a set of perfect scores on the last show. Perfect scores do not protect you from being voted off, however. Just like Sabrina Bryan. She received a perfect score in another season and was eliminated early. Rodeo champion Ty Murry has worked on his dancing the most and it shows. He happens to be very adorable too. His background as a rodeo star did little to prepare him, but more than likely gives him a wide and different fan base for voters. Shawn Johnson, gold medal winning gymnast, showed us that she can perform on the hard dance floor just as well as she can on a soft mat. And rounding this amazing cast of celebrities is Gilles Marini who didn’t make a move I didn’t absolutely love.

So who will take home the winner’s 100k bonus? One dancing duo will be sent home this week. Who will it be? But afterwards, when only three celebrities and their partners are left, each dance team has a chance to prove to the judge’s they’re the ones who deserve to win. I can’t wait until the final show airs! Luckily I have a DVR for a backup just in case something comes up.

Watching Dancing with the Stars is even better when you watch it on a high definition TV. Recently my son convinced me to ditch my regular TV and make the jump to an HDTV. Holy Cow! You may be thinking what I used to think – how can it make that much of a difference in picture and sound quality? Well, I’m here to tell you it really does. Of course I also had to get HD cable service from my local cable provider, Comcast Cable, but the service is outstanding and the rates for adding high definition service are very low. I thought “what the heck?” and added the Comcast Digital Voice and High speed internet while I was at it since they could be added for such a low rate. My new broadband Internet service is lightning fast and has opened up a whole new world of multimedia that I didn’t know existed before Comcast High Speed Online. I can call all my friends and family nationwide without paying long distance charges with the amazing Digital Phone service. If Comcast is your local cable provider or you’re planning on moving to an area covered by Comcast, I definitely recommend calling them up and ordering their great services. I suggest using the web to find the best Comcast Cable promotions and savings out there. You really can save a bunch if you know where to find them. The Triple Play Bundle is the best way to go so make sure you consider it. All three digital services for a big discount from Comcast.
