What Would You Have Done?

By admin · Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Yesterday I was taking my Basset Hound for a walk and this young girl is walking this German Shepherd who is clearly pulling her down the street towards my dog. He`s barking crazily, panting and clearly wants my dog…NOW. I’m not going to lie, I panicked, so I took Watson to the other side of the street. The German Shepherd pulls this girl over to my dog and runs up to him all barking crazily and stuff, and my dog of course is scared so he has his tail between his legs and he peed himself…total submission, I was wondering if he was going to go belly up because that’s what he does, he’s a wimp. Anyways, I was yelling at this girl to not let her dog come over to me, and that she should have better control of her dog. Well, so much for that obviously. Thankfully, all the dogs did was sniff each other and they even did the little play bow dance for a bit, but then I told her I had to go. But TRUST ME, I was scared my dog was going to get eaten for lunch by this dog by the way it was acting towards us before it came up to my dog.

What would you have done in this situation? I tried to avoid this girl and her dog by going to the other side of the street and I told her not to bring her dog over to me. What can I do in this situation, when people/young kids think it’s alright for dogs to "play" when they are out. My dog is fine with other dogs, but at times I worry about him as he is very submissive towards other dogs and probably couldn’t defend himself well or at all if he got into a dog fight…I guess that is my main fear a dog fight,so how can I avoid this happening with other people’s dogs when they won’t listen!

Sorry for the long story, I just had to get my anger out at people who can’t control their animals!
She was a kid…I felt bad for yelling at her. She didn`t know any better obviously, she probably weighed less than her dog.
Yes, he is very well socialized. When I first got him we camped at our national park lots and he got to see tons of people and dogs of all breeds and sizes so that`s not the issue. I think literally he was thinking, “Holy S***!`This dogs gonna eat me!“ lol

In this situation I would have raised holy heck and made that lady know that she was not to come onto the other side of the street near me in any certain terms. I promise I would have made her more scared of me then anything else.

From now on, I would carry some type of protection with me while walking my dog, legal of course. That could be a baseball bat, pepper spray, electric cattle prod.

I would have ABSOLUTELY gone to the other side of the street and had this idiot still dared to approach me I would have informed her quite loudly that I would be going postal on her and her dog if they got any closer.

I see so many idiots with aggressive dogs that I do not take my dogs out in situations where I will run into them. These people are SO clueless about their dogs.

A baseball bat is a great deterrent, an idiotic owner will think twice (ok at least one time) before approaching you if you start wielding that bat.

I completely understand your situation. Dog fights are very nasty and you don’t want your dog to be harmed

Pepper mace spray. Your right is to protect your dog. Her dog was out of control, No matter if it was on a leash or what.. Depending on ur age, after you sprayed the dog grab your dog an run to the nearest house or fenced yard and stay there until the dog is gone. Get away from any dog as fast as you can. If this dog or any other dog that seems aggressive runs to wards you with their owner or by theirself get your mace out, and go the other way slowly do not run or they will chase.
When the dog approaches you closer spray it and move.. Make sure you get it in his eyes because he wont be able to see which will give u time to get out of his way.. After you spray dont stay in its line.. Move away from it. Left or right because the dog may still continue to run straight bitting.

I would keep walking and ignore the other dog. U told her to stay away from you and Watson (cute). He is definitely submissive and that was for his own protection – if he was a Rottie/or other breed that wouldn’t back down – they would fight! That’s ugly – then the gal would have to pay for Vet bills if there are any injuries to Watson.

First of all, sorry about your dog! Was your dog traumatized earlier by another dog because this doesn’t seem normal… usually strange dogs will sniff and then they will decide if they hate or like each other. I never knew a dog to pee oneself at the sight of another but I suppose it happens and I’m very sorry about that. I wouldn’t have been so harsh on the girl. It’s good for dogs to socialize with others. When I take my basset hound to the park, there are a couple people there with their dogs and sometimes they’ll ask if it’s ok to let their dogs loose and I’ll let mine loose and they’ll play. It’s good for the social life of a dog. Did you socialize Watson as a pup? I would suggest getting some play dates with some dogs that you know are okay. I can see how you would probably be afraid that they might fight, though but it seems the german shephard just wanted to play and was too strong for the girl (my basset is sometimes too strong for me lol) but it happens. But don’t let Watson play with dogs you are uncomfortable with but do socialize him a bit more if you can. Hope I helped.

P.S. But this is just me, where I live, everyone’s dogs play together, it’s just normal but from reading previous answers it seems that people seem more protective of their dogs than people around here are. Either way, good luck.

I’m with you. People who can’t or won’t control their dogs are so frustrating. Do they put up with that behavior at home?

You’re lucky your dog is submissive. They rarely get in to fights because they won’t fight back.

In this case, I would
a) Try to stay calm. Your dog will feel it if you panic and it may make him want to defend you.
b) Even though it’s obvious she doesn’t, calmly ask the girl if she has her dog under control.
c) When she says "no", try a loud, low "NO" to the dog.
d) If the "no" fails, bodily put yourself between the two dogs and stand there like you’re the almighty cock of the walk. Don’t make eye contact with the aggressive dog, but try to look big and serious.

There used to be this ridiculous Sheltie that lived across a very, very, busy street from where I would walk my dog. The Sheltie would come bounding down the hill ready to cross the traffic to get to my dogs. I’d stop, turn towards him and yell "NO" in my loudest voice, and he’d stop dead in his tracks. I’ve also had this work with dogs that I run into when I’m biking.

Good luck!

I would have picked my dog up even if he is 30 kgs LOL, and told her if she didn’t get her out of control pos the f***ck away from me right now I’d call animal control.

I would of done exactly the same thing. I have 2 L/H mini dachshunds which are big compared to one of my 2kg Pomeranians (2lb 2oz). Every time I walked her I was very wary & if I saw another dog coming the other way that looked the least big aggro I’d pick her up do an about face & walk till I could find a side street to turn off.

IDK whether you could of reported her to the local council? In Australia dogs have to be on leads & be fully controlled by their master/owner @ all times (except within a designated dog park – which I won’t use how can 2 little dogs defend themselves against g/sheps, rotties, bull-terriers etc?).

The only other thing you could probably do is turn in the opposite direction & walk away fr the on-coming dog.

My friend had her little fluff ball dog attacked by a larger dog, the vet bill was over $1,000 – she sued the owner & won. But it was typical of most owners ‘my dog won’t hurt yours’ – how the hell do they know what their dog is thinking?

I’ve had G/Sheps that were trained to ‘companion dog X’ standard & even helped the police catch offenders but you must have total control & dominance over yr dog before you can unleash it on an unsuspecting innocent public.

Hope you feel better now, @ least you know the problem is a universal one. Take care of yourself & your darling basset.

well it sounds like your dog being submissive might save his life someday. ive lost count on my encounters with dogs loose being walked off leash my dogs been attacked shes ok but now retraining her to be nice on leash until the next encounter anyway.you should carry something in case you need to help your dog while walking. no one enforces the laws on controlling dogs until after something happens. as far as anger goes i carry pepper spray now which id like to use on the lazy people not the dog.
