wrong… 1,2,3 are steps.. 4 and 8 are pauses. so you only count 1,2,3 5,6,7.. or you can count 123-4-567-8. Where you count 4 and 8 quick. But if you are new to the dance you assume that it is step and get it all wrong. So people tend not to count 4 and 8.
The reason you count is because it is easier to teach people that way, because they don’t know the beat yet. Once they get to know that, yes you dont need to count to dance.

berkeli91, the “4″ is in your mind.. the steps you make are in 1,2,3 but 4 is just a pause you do, the same with 8.. you can sing this time too if you need it, but as you paused with your body you can take a breath to keep counting =P
zzune, this genre is salsa.. latin music are a group of genres: salsa, merengue, chachacha, among others..:) so you can call it in which one u prefer
