Is a dance pad required to play Dancing with the Stars?

I’m thinking of buying Dancing with The Stars for PS2 for my 4-year old cousin. She loves Dancing with the Stars, but i don’t have a dance pad.

You can just use the arrows on your PS2 controller but its quite boring. The dance mat will make the game much for fun but its not compulsory
