My and my woman are taking dance lessons from a private instructor, how much is average? I want to make sure we're not being duped.
It really depends on where you live and who is giving the dancing lessons. I have included some prices so you can get a better understanding. As you can see if you take lessons from a professional it will cost more than from students who are giving the lessons. Just out of curiosity, how much are you paying for the lessons? Good Luck!
In New York-
Private lessons
Individual private lesson $95
6 lessons $510
10 lessons $820
15 lessons $1200
Delaware University-
Private 50-minute lessons are also available at $50 per couple
Boston-
One hour of dance instruction:
$70 per individual
$75 per couple
Three hours of dance instruction:
$195 per individual, ($65 per lesson)
$210 per couple ($70 per lesson)
Five hours of dance instruction:
$295 per individual, ($59 per lesson)
$325 per couple ($65 per lesson)
if it is a private instructor it should be 100-200!!!
anyways you made a good choice by doin dance!!!

The last time I had a private lesson from an internationally-rated Argentine tango instructor (this year) it was $90 per hour plus studio rental.

I assume we're talking about couple dancing like Ballroom.
Average for my area is $75 for 45 minutes lesson, for a couple or an individual. This is what good teachers charge. Good AND famous charge more, sometimes a lot more, up to $300, but I assume that's not your case.
If you live in highly populated area like New York or San Francisco, any package deal tends to be a ripoff, because those are usually offered by weaker instructors. Good instructors don't need to have you on the contract in order to make sure you come back. Good ones don't even care if you come back or not – they are fully booked anyway. On the other hand, they are always under pressure to give you good lessons, or else you go to some other instructor should the quality of lessons ever decline.
Package deals may make more sense and have higher quality in less populated areas where there isn't enough customers to begin with, or in the areas where Ballroom isn't big. There are 7 or so studios in 20 mile radius in my area, hence package deals make no sense.
