How do I learn to dance soca?

Posted on Saturday in learn to dance | by

I'm a white guy and I want to learn how to dance to soca music? I don't want to go to the club and embarrass myself.

Soca is a mixture of soul music and calypso music, which is a Caribbean genre of music that is very rythmic. The only suggestion I have for you is to dance very sexily and in very close proximity to your girlfriend or wife. That is the only way any guy who wasn't Caribbean would look cool dancing to soca music.

    How to do:
    the "Soca Cha Cha Stroll"

    To Hear song snippet:
    go to the bottom!

First you must learn to do the "Cha Cha"

Count 4 steady beats: 1,2,3,4 – do that several times.
Now add the word "and" between each number/beat.
    1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and – Repeat several times.
    Now clap on 1, 2, 3 "and" 4
It's important to clap on the "and" between 3 & 4.
    Repeat several times.
To do the "Cha Cha" you simply replace your claps with
some good old fashion "foot motion".
This is the way you move your feet to the beat:
On beat "1" Step forward slightly with your Left foot.
On beat "2" Step back on your Right foot.
Then quickly Step Left on beat "3", Right on "and"
    then Left on beat "4".
It should look something like this:

    Now your ready to learn:
    the "Soca Cha Cha Stroll"

Start by forming 2 lines facing each other!
Suggestions: girls on one side boy on the other
or kids on one side parents on the other.
Lines should be about 3 feet apart.

Now girls (kids), put your Right hand in the air and wave it.
Next boys (parents), put your left hand in the air and wave it.

To do the dance you must "Cha Cha" one time
then take 2 steps in the direction that you waved your hands
starting with the foot that is opposite to the hand that you raised
*****girls Right hand start with your left foot*****
*****boys Left hand start with your right foot*****
dragging your feet quickly across the dance floor (for the stroll)

(Children can slide 2 times instead of taking steps.)
If you're doing it right you'll be strolling sideways
sort of like a crab (just a joke!)

    Here we go!

    And Stroll and Stroll

"Cha Cha" again and "Stroll" the opposite direction.

Follow direction given in the song for the rest of the dance!
