Hi, I started taking belly dancing lessons a few months ago – nothing super serious – just through the school district’s extension courses, but it’s really fun.
Anyway, during the summer there aren’t classes offered and I would like to keep on top of what I’ve learned. Does anyone have an opinion on instructional DVDs for the "advanced beginner"?
Also, I have zils and am practicing (practicing, practicing) but they are really frustrating me – does anyone have advice on how to get the dance steps while using the zils mastered?
Thanks~
Hello!!!
I’ve been belly dancing for about 8 years now, started just for fun and yes, it is adictive!
I strongly recommend Jenna’s instructional DVDs. She is an accomplished performer and in my opinion a great teacher. I really like that she keeps a mindset of "safety first" and to never sacrifice technique.
Her DVD Basics and Beyond cover the basics (arm positions, figure eights, some traveling steps and many more), although as a somewhat seasoned dancer I found it very helpful and even learned a thing or two.
And keep this in mind: Never think you have completely mastered a move, as simple as it may be, there is always room for improvement, you can always make that move seem (and be) a little more natural.
About the zills, you are on your way, it really does take a lot (I mean a looooooooooooooot) of practice. Jenna’s Drum Solo – The Heartbeat of Bellydance might help in the section where she and Raqui break down rhythms and combinations.
Last but not least, I have recently bought her Bellydance – The Next Level, but haven’t had a chance to watch it yet because my stupid DVD player won’t work
, but I am sure it will not disappoint me, and, although I said to never consider a move completely mastered, I know it may get boring and of course we need a bigger vocabulary of moves.
Ultimately, I don’t work for World Dance New York, never met Jenna in person and I am not promoting her videos for any gain. It is just that I have been through tougher times in Belly Dance, when it was so hard to have access to study material, such as music, instructional videos, dancing gear, that I was very pleasantly surprised to find such great quality videos for such an affordable price.
Best of luck to you,

My favorite DVD is Michelle Joyce’s "Drills! Drills! Drills!" It has a variety of drills to help perfect movements, and it also has layers. Additionally, she uses finger cymbals in the drills. The only thing I don’t like about the DVD is she refers to the gallop pattern as a triplet.
What I’ve found that has helped me with the zills is to play them with a song that starts slow and gets faster and faster. It’s starts of slow and easy, and as the tempo increases so does the challenge.
I also enjoy Jenna’s "The Next Level" DVD. She has lots of layers and turns in the video.
